"Aaaaat laaaaaaast!"

I leftwork this evening with the intention of going to my neighborhood Mexican grocerto pick up something for dinner tomorrow, AND, of course, a six-pack of beer asI did NOT get my drink on this weekend.

Whileon the bus ride home I mused my options.

“ShouldI get pork or chicken?” I thought to myself as the soundtrack from SaturdayNight Fever blared in my ears. “I mean,I have that half-bottle of black bean seasoning in the fridge….I guess I coulddo chicken and black-bean for dinner tomorrow….”

I gotoff the bus and wandered to the grocer while fidgeting with my earphones – theyhave been giving trouble as one of the wires had a short in it. I entered the store and went straight to themeat section.

“Rass!”I thought to myself. “Seven dolla’ fithree degeh-degeh piece a’ mawgah chicken breast?! *kiss teet* Mi nah buy none…..”

(Translation: “Oh dear!. Seven dollars for three skinny pieces of chicken breast? *sound of irritation/exasperation* Idon’t think I will buy this today…”)

Ichecked out the other options available: cooked octopus (erm, no!), catfishnuggets (yum, but HOW does one cook catfish nuggets? Don’t you have to deep-fry them orsomething?), rancid looking tilapia….

Then Isaw it tucked away in the corner of the display. That elusive item I have been looking forsince I moved to my neighborhood.

“Rassclawt!”I exclaimed loudly…..shoppers turning around briefly to glance at me. “Saltfish!”

Evenbetter- Canadian salt-fish!

Thegrin on my face was immovable. I haveNOT seen or tasted salt-fish since….well, my last trip to Jamaica over a yearago. You see, I live in a predominantlyMexican neighborhood and I know they use salt-fish in some recipes, but I swearI have never seen salt-fish sold in that grocer. Maybe I just wasn’t looking hard enough. I had always promised myself to travel to thenorth of the city to buy salt-fish and patties from the Caribbean neighborhoodthere but never got around to it. Now –I can cross salt-fish off my ‘To-Do’ list.

Gigglinglike the little girl I am, I collected the ingredients for my all-timefavorite: salt-fish fritters.

And mia go nyam salt fish fritters tonight, tomorrow and the day after!

Mymother’s recipe for salt-fish fritters altered by me for convenience:

1 ½cup of flour (roughly)

Groundblack pepper

Salt-fish(around ½ lb or more for chunkier fritters)

1small onion sliced/diced

Escallion– chopped

Tomato-diced

1 egg

Hotpepper sauce OR preferably thinly sliced pieces of scotch-bonnet pepper

Water

Copiousamounts of oil – preferably coconut.

Prepsalt-fish by cutting into small pieces, Place salt-fish in microwave-safe bowl, rinse once, then cover withwater and nuke on HIGH for 5 minutes. This will remove excess salt and semi-cook the fish. Let sit for 5 minutes, drain water, andshred.

Putthe flour in a large bowl. Add blackpepper to taste. Or is you’re like me –add black pepper until the flour looks gray. Combine dry ingredients thoroughly. Add water slowly to flour mixture until texture is similar to thickpancake mix – not watery.

Addegg, Mix/beat egg into mixturethoroughly. Add hot pepper sauce/slicescotch bonnet pepper to taste (nuh taste di raw egg mixture – just add what youthink is a tolerable amount of hot sauce…) Stir in chopped onion and scallion. Add diced tomatoes and shredded salt-fish.

Letsit for ½ hour. (Even better – let sitcovered in fridge overnight – the spices and fish flavor permeate the flourmixture and the result is positively ORGASMIC…)

Heatfrying pan. And oil. Nuff nuff. The morethe better. Those damn fritters absorboil better than those things used to sop-up crude oil from an oil spilldisaster in the Gulf.

Usinga spoon ladle portions of the batter to make three-inch diameter sizedportions. Lightly brown on each sideensuring that the batter is cooked through to the center before removing frompan. When cooked, remove from pan andplace on plate with paper towels to absorb excess oil.

Cool,then nyam!

Disclaimer: I am NOT endorsing Mitt Romney as the nextPRESIDENT, I am endorsing him as the alternate presidential candidate to BarackObama.

Look –whether I like it or not as per the U.S. constitution there is going to be apresidential election this November, AND the country has to decide between twocandidates. Now, y’all know myunwavering support is behind our current president Barack Obama. However, I have to face the off-chance thathe could NOT be re-elected in November. The American voter is a unique breed: they’ll probably elect a Democrat-held house and senate in November, butvote Republican with regards to the presidential race. Like I’ve said before – intelligence and rationalis NOT a strong point in this country; cross, guns and bible clutching reigns supreme…..

ThereforeI have to make my peace with what the opposition has to offer – and my pick isMitt Romney. His stance on the issues ofthe economy, social issues and foreign matters is the most tolerable. To me – he seems the most presidential andone with whom I think would best represent our country on internationalstage. If my fellow Americans chose theGOP candidate over our current president in November I’d rather it be MittRomney than the parade of morons currently on tour in the southern states:

NewtGingrich is not acceptable – he brings too much baggage to the table with hismany marriages, his skewed views on the economy, his stance on social issues,and his temper. His political past hasbeen a checkered one – he was basically fired as speaker of the house in the90s. His morals are very, VERYquestionable. He was fined $300,000 for84 alleged ethic violations by the House Ethics Committee in the 90s – thefirst time ever in the history of the United States. And based on recent comments he wants to turnthe American labor force into a domestic help labor pool for the rich. He’s all about the 1%.

RickSantorum is a sanctimonious religious zealot OBSESSED with gay sex more thanthe twink store clerk at Dorothy’s Dildos and More in San Francisco. He may be the darling of the religiousconservatives, but he does not bring confidence or rational ideas to thetable. He would probably consider thatpublicity whore Sarah Palin as his running mate. The man is so uptight you could shove a pieceof coal up his ass and get a diamond in return….

RonPaul is a idealist whack-job whose libertarian views on taxes, government andforeign affairs may be too outside mainstream America’s thinking to beacceptable. He also exploits racism tohis advantage – I don’t care how much you protest about your affiliation with anewsletter you published in the past – if your name was on the damn thing thenyou are endorsing the content. AND heraised his kids to think the same – his son Rand Paul, an elected official –famously said during his run for office that the Civil Rights Act of the 1960sshould be repealed.

Sowe’re left with Mitt Romney – and he’s not too bad. I could live with myself if he waselected.

REASONS WHY THE PNP WON THE JAMAICA GENERAL ELECTIONS

Yesterday was a historic day in Jamaica. Not only was the traditional election cycle of two-terms or more for the ruling party broken, but it also gave the youngest prime minister in the nation’s history the shortest term as prime minister - ever. On top of that, Jamaica saw the lowest turn-out of registered voters in any Jamaican election (51% of registered voters), and the People’s National Party won by a stunning margin that not even seasoned pollsters foresaw. The election results caught many off-guard, but surprised fewer people as to the reasons why it turned out the way they did.

I spent last night and most of this morning and afternoon not only reading articles from various news agencies (and more importantly the commentaries by any article’s readers), but also listening to Jamaican talk-radio callers commentary on what they hypothesized happened. Here are a few reasons given why the People’s National Party (PNP) won handily over the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP):

- THE ENTIRE DUDAS/MANATT DEBACLE: (from the Miami Herald) “In late 2009, former Prime Minister Bruce Golding faced a critical decision in his 2-year old administration: Should he hand over reputed drug lord Christopher “Dudus” Coke to face narcotics and arms trafficking charges in the United States or stonewall. Golding balked and admitted months later to misleading Jamaicans about his efforts to squash the extradition. His eventual decision in May 2011 to comply with the U.S. request set off days of rioting in Coke’s Kingston stronghold that left almost 80 people dead.” This was one of the major incidents that voters never forgave Golding for – he was voted in to promote change and voters saw more-or-less of the same. Not only was the matter handled badly, in times or dire financial need the JLP administration hired the US based Manatt, Phelps and Phillips law-firm with valuable tax-payers money to serve the party’s (not the country’s) best interests….and lied about it.

- ‘YOUNG AND NEW PRIME MINISTER’ ANDREW HOLNESS NOT CONVINCING ENOUGH: I, like many other Jamaicans, were NOT impressed with the qualifications of the “youthful” new prime minister. Nor were they pleased with the way he was selected and shoved on the Jamaican population as the new prime minister by the party officials of the ruling JLP. On top of that Holness failed to provide Jamaicans with a sound and solid vision for Jamaica. Manley had a vision, Seaga had a vision, Obama had a vision, Reagan had a vision, Thatcher had a vision, even the current GOP presidential candidate nutcases each have a vision for their country. Holness? *crickets* Most prime ministers or presidents run for public office because they WANT it; we got the impression that he was pushed in to save the face of the JLP using his “youth” as a selling point; a tactic that failed. Jamaicans went back to familiar territory rather than face an unsure leader. Labourite voters stayed home to show their displeasure at the Holness selection; PNP voters turned out in record number to show theirs.

- TOO MANY RESTRICTIONS FOR A PEOPLE WHO LOVE LIVING WITHOUT RESTRICTIONS: The JLP implemented austerity measures to prop up the economy – cutting jobs, folding to the IMF, etc. Suddenly – Jamaican policemen who were used to making money on the side saw their income cut, public service workers laid off, teachers pressured to go back to school for further certification without any increase in compensation, cuts in social services, enforcing unpopular laws – it just become too much for the happy-go-lucky nature of the Jamaican people. The hard lives of many Jamaicans became even harder – too much for them to bear. They remember the happier times BEFORE the current JLP government - conveniently forgetting the corruption of the previous administration and ignoring the global effects of a worldwide recession – and voted nostalgically. AUSTERITY MEASURES HAS NOT WORKED ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD – why should Jamaica suddenly be an exception?

- THE JLP ADMINISTRATION SEEN AS A FAILURE TO HALT RISING COSTS AND UNEMPLOYMENT: Sure – the world recession was not helping an economy wrecked by 18 years of mismanagement (under PJ Patterson). But the electorate wanted results or at least empathy – and got none. A recent example would be the committee to investigate the billing practices of the JPS. They declared they found nothing wrong with the JPS billing system despite the raucous wails about high bills from consumers….AND they had to foot the cost of moving electric meters to their front gates. The government should have looked into subsidizing energy costs or at least rattle their sabers loudly and publicly at the JPS holding company – just ANYTHING to address the issue. Voters were tired that their needs were always being ignored for the betterment of corporations (the parent company of JPS was posting record profits on the backs of poor people). And rising unemployment was not helping.

- WHAT DID THE JLP MPs DO FOR THEIR CONSTITUENTS? Over-and-over another common thread in comments from news readers is that they felt as if they were being treated with disdain. The JLP councilors were not meeting with and/or dealing with the needs of their constituents, the arrogance and perceived elitist attitude of JLP elected officials (for example Daryl Vaz and James Robertson) constantly making the news. Again, people felt they were being ignored in favor of businesses and corporations. Sure – you need to strengthen the business environment to promote a strong economy, but you also have to maintain good relations with the electorate – and they felt they were being ignored.

As someone said - this was not necessarily a PNP win but a vote against a JLP severely tainted by Bruce Golding. However, I say give Prime Minister designate Portia Simpson-Miller a chance – she may have learned a few things in the four years she was leader of the opposition. A glimmer of this to me was a surprising stance she took while campaigning for an election that everyone said she would lose: despite the negative effect it would have on her re-election chances she tackled a very, very, very unpopular issue and said that it was time to do something about it. She brought up the issue of the buggery law of Jamaica and said it was time to review and possibly repeal – much to the chagrin of the ignorant religious zealots that dominate the Jamaican populace. But this move shows that Simpson-Miller heard the threats made by UN, European and American officials that aid by donor countries will cease if recipient countries do not respect the rights of their own GLBT population. She sent a message to the donor countries: message heard and understood.

And at the same time was hinting to Jamaicans that time has come to do things differently. Let’s just see what the future holds.

Despite how you may feel about how the election turned out, or whether your party won or lost, I can only end with the words of our national anthem:

Today I HAD to go to my local grocer or face possible starvation. I’ve been putting this trip off all weekend as I was in a conundrum as to my meal plans for the coming week and didn’t feel like roaming the aisles of the market while deciding what to buy.

However, as the day wore on the hunger pangs increased, and as I was not in the mood to fry bacon and eggs I ventured into the chilly Chicago afternoon to my neighborhood Aldi Supermarket with an ad-hoc grocery list in my mind. I entered the store, music blaring in my ears from the headphones attached to my phone. As I wandered the narrow aisles I remembered my weekly mission and I suddenly thought to myself, “I wonder if they just MIGHT have it in stock today…?” Deciding I had nothing to lose I went to the assigned area and checked if the object of my year-long quest was on the shelves this week.

And lo and behold – there they were. Cans and cans of tinned corned beef.

I stifled my gasp of delighted astonishment but couldn’t stop the tears from welling in my eyes. “OhmyGod!” I thought to myself. “They FINALLY have corned beef in stock!” It took me a few moments before I could reach for what I thought was a mirage and stow a couple of cans in my shopping cart.

Okay – by now some of you may be wondering if I’ve finally cracked. (Well, no more than usual…)

You see – there has been a shortage of tinned corned beef in the US since last year. Something to do with tainted beef from Brazil introduced into the canning process through a canning factory in Chicago. Some of the corned beef was tested and was found to contain a drug used to treat cows for parasites. As a precaution the U.S. Food, Safety and Inspection Services halted all imports of canned corned beef from Brazil until recently, and that led to a year-long shortage.

Tinned corned beef (or bully beef to use the British vernacular) is a staple in the Caribbean diet. Tinned corned beef is NOT to be confused with the Jewish or European deli-styled sliced corned beef. Tinned corned beef is boiled corned beef that is shredded with a small amount of gelatin, then canned. In Jamaica it is prepared with mayo, ketchup, hot pepper and sliced onions and served between slices of bread as a sandwich, or steamed with cabbage and onions seasoned with black pepper and served on top of white rice. In Puerto Rico they stew the corned beef in tomato paste with seasoning and also serve on white rice (the Bahamian dish is similar). In Trinidad they curry the damn thing. Actually, in Trinidad they curry EVERYTHING.......but I digress.

Tinned corned beef is a quick, tasty – and more important – cheap dish. (Though not so cheap anymore – due to demand it was $3.69 a can in Aldi.)

Since the ban was lifted and regular production (allegedly) resumed I have been scouring the aisles of all supermarkets but to no avail. I’m not the only one on the hunt - if you Google the phrase “corned beef shortage” you will see a barrage of results on this subject. Regular supplies have returned to some states but here in Illinois the shortage continued – although there was no shortage of canned corned beef hash…..go figure.

Until now.

*burp* I am writing to you after consuming three corned beef sandwiches with lots of onions.

Wickedly good. Corned beef is now back in my life.

And it was worth the wait.

Jamaican man attacked by dog in Benito Juarez Park in Chicago

Yesterday evening started out as routinely as usual. I got home after 5:30 pm and on my arrival, as is customary, had to drop everything to greet and grab the mutt for his walk. Cradling the phone between my shoulder and my ear (I was talking to Gary at the time) I snapped Phelix into his harness and we headed downstairs.

I crossed the narrow road separating my block from the park I walk Phelix and was in a spirited discussion with Gary on why I would never get another Blackberry. “Ugh, I am soooo tired of battery pulls, the screen freezes, the touch-screen malfunctions, the memory allocation for applications is pathetic…..” I argued as I approached the entrance to the Benito Juarez Park as Phelix sniffed the grass near-by for any pee-mails left by other dogs.

As I stood by the entrance I saw a young man with medium-sized dog – I think a boxer – around 50 feet from my location. The dog spotted Phelix and to my horror bolted towards us at full speed.

Now, unfortunately – this is NOT the first time Phelix has been the target of other dogs in public spaces. For some reason, really really really STUPID people seem to think that they don’t have to leash their dogs in public areas, and Phelix has been attacked before. In those past attacks there is my patented jerk-and-catch technique I employ whereas I literally yank Phelix into the air like a yo-yo, and on his descent catch him in the my arms – my feet ready defensibly to kick at any attacking dog.

This time, because I had the phone in one hand I didn’t have time to deploy my patented jerk-and-catch technique. Instead I reached down and scooped Phelix into my arms while still cradling the phone between my shoulder and left ear.

“Shit, hold on Gary…” I started to say and was interrupted mid-sentence as the dog barreled into me to get at Phelix.

At this point everything went into slow motion – kinda like the scene in any gangster movie when the lovable hoodlum is walking down the road with a bunch of roses in his hand for his sweetheart when he is gunned down by rival thugs from a passing car…….the roses slowly flying in the air and landing on the pavement – all to the sound of some slow, intense Italian opera sung in the background.

Well, this is the 21st century, and the song of choice for my dramatic scene is Beyonce’s “Halo”.

“Hit me like a ray of sun, burning through my darkest night”….the force of the dog’s momentum crashing in to me shoves me off my feet.

“You're the only one that I want, think I'm addicted to your light”…with my right arm I clutch a barking Phelix protectively to my chest away from the jaws of the larger dog as I begin to fall..

“I swore I'd never fall again, but this don't even feel like falling”……..I land on the hard pavement, my left elbow taking the brunt of the fall, the sudden jolt taking the breath out of me.

“Gravity can't forget, to pull me back to the ground again”…..I slowly turn my head away from the dog, my mouth open in a primal scream as I watch the phone that flew out of my hand in the melee crash face-first on the pavement.

(I’m such a drama queen.)

At this time I’m on my back with the dog making another attempt at Phelix when the stupid owner FINALLY reaches us and while yelling grabs at his dog. The dog, hearing the anger in his owner’s voice, suddenly bolts out of the park and runs into the street nearby. I got up slowly – a little embarrassed for falling – and after ascertaining that the dog is no where around put Phelix on the ground. He bristles indignantly and continues barking at his would-be attacker who has now been caught by his owners and is being physically reprimanded. I pick up my phone afraid of the condition it may be in and to my surprise found it to be undamaged.

“Erm, Gary – let me call you back…..I was just attacked by a dog……”

By now the owner had his dog on a leash and was looking in my direction. “You need to come over here and say something to me” I called to him, finally getting angry. He came over dragging his dog and began to hit the animal. “No, STOP!” I yelled at him. “Do NOT take this out on your dog – this is YOUR fault – you should have had your dog on a leash! Why didn’t you have him on a leash?”

He began to mumble some pathetic excuse and I vented at him a little more, asked his name, reprimanded him again, then finished my walk with Phelix. I got the phone out (still amazed it hadn’t shattered during the fall) and called Gary to update him on what happened and to resume our interrupted conversation.

I returned to my apartment and was telling Gary that I knew I was going to pay the price for my fall the next day in aches and pains. As I am talking I kept getting a nagging feeling that my left elbow was wet. I took off my jacket and felt my elbow (I had on a long sleeve rugby shirt). On feeling a slight dampness I told Gary to hold on as I struggled the polo shirt off. I went to the bathroom, held up my elbow to the mirror and to my horror saw something white poking out of my skin.

“Er, Gary, let me call you back, there’s something white poking out of my elbow….”

Concerned, Gary told me “listen, star, hang up and pay attention to your elbow. Call me back later when you know what is what….”

I hung up and slowly reached to touch the white thing praying it wasn’t bone matter…...

Yup, just as I thought – it was some fatty tissue the size of a dime that burst through my skin at the elbow from the impact of my fall. There was another small split below my elbow an inch below my elbow. Trying not to panic I tested the range of motion of my left elbow – all was okay, nothing felt broken or fractured.

I stared at the ominous looking white fatty tissue now slightly oozing with blood and wondered if this merited an emergency room visit. Honestly, despite its scary look I didn’t think the wounds were that serious – none of the cuts were deep enough to warrant stitches and any doctor would just clean up the wound and bandage it – for now. I did just that – wiped what I could with alcohol and used a couple of Band-Aids to cover the cuts. I then put a couple of cotton pads on top of that and bound my elbow with a make-shift wrap cut from an old undershirt. I swallowed a couple of ibuprofen to help with the swelling.

I slept okay last night and woke up without any major aches and pains anywhere else. My elbow has gotten a little more tender and I can’t bend my arm fully without pain – but that it to be expected. I’m going to run to the store soon to get some more band-aids - larger ones this time – and a couple bottles of ibuprofen to help with the swelling. I’m kinda scared to remove the bandage and see the condition of the cuts but I’m figuring that if they are not hurting that much it must be okay…..I hope. However, I’ll have to face my fear when I change the bandages later.

But as I walked Phelix this morning I angrily wondered to myself – why was I paying the painful price for someone else’s stupidity. I swear – if I had seen that dog owner again at that moment I probably would have punched him in the face.

But for now…..*sigh*….life goes on……

Troubling, very troubling.

PresidentialGOP candidate front-runner Herman Cain has been busy for the past fewweeks. First he created a firestorm ofcontroversy with his now infamous “9-9-9”plan, then he fanned the flames evenhotter with his comments about poor people and eating “used food”. Not content with his now roaring bonfire hethrew on more fuel with incendiary comments on handling immigration troubles atthe US-Mexican border with lethal electric fences.

Thisweek, he has been floundering in explanations amongst the revelation that hewas accused of sexual harassment while tenured at the National RestaurantsAssociation. First he denied the report,then he hinted that there may have been an incident, THEN when confronted withthe facts he suddenly has total recall at what actually happened but refuses toacknowledge any role in the investigation and consequent settlement thatoccurred. He has been caught on camera losinghis temper to the point of almost swearing on being asked about his pastindiscretions. He dodges the media andblames everyone but himself for past incident(s) that is legally documented.

I’mnot at all shocked that he has been accused of sexually harassing someone – tobe honest, I think having a sex-scandal in the closet is a pre-requisite tobecoming an elected member or official of the Republican Party.

Recently, to my dismay, the vomitous name KARDASHIAN has been given top billing and feature stories in recent entertainment news. In my view, the Kardashian skanks are one of the worst things to come out of California and pollute the airwaves since Ronald Reagan came to power.

“Who are the Kardashians” some of you may ask.

The Kardashian spawns – er, I mean sisters – Kim, Kourtney and Khloe (how original with the spelling) – are fame whores who reside in Beverley Hills. They are daughters of lawyer Robert Kardashian (who was on the OJ Simpson defense team) and step-daughters of Olympic decathlon champion Bruce Jenner. Kim, the elder of the sisters, rose to fame when a sex tape she made with (unknown) R&B singer Ray J was circulated on the internet.

How classy

Kim used this scandal – opps, I mean, OPPORTUNITY to promote herself and ended up with a reality series on the E! Channel called ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’.

Why people will watch a show that espouses the plastic superficiality of Hollywood life where the Kardashian brats prowl, pout and push their breasts in any willing male face just to get their way is beyond me. The sad part is that there are teenage girls who aspire to be like them….and then society wonders why this generation of young girls have such low self esteem when it comes to self-worth and self-image.

According to Wikipedia Kim Kardashian is an American businesswoman, socialite, television personality, model and actress. If you can call flitting from paparazzi to paparazzi camera flashbulbs socializing, making forgettable appearances in third-rate sitcoms acting, or classify selling video tapes of your vee-jay-jay on the internet for publicity as a business transaction…..then they’re probably right.

The head skank…opps, I mean, elder sister Kim got married this summer after a whirlwind courtship by NBA basketball knucklehead Kris Humphries (okay, what the eff is up with the use of the letter ‘k’ with first names with this circle of clowns?!) in an $18 million wedding extravaganza that was taped for the second season of the Kardashian’s upcoming reality series “Kourtney and Kim Take New York”.

But why the sudden focus on the Kardashians this week? Because after only 72 days of marriage head slag Kim has filed for divorce, citing the standard Hollywood cliché - “irreconcilable differences”.

Oh, the HORROR!!!! How will the sanctity of marriage – that bastion of society that the mere presence of gays threaten – every rebound from this development?! It must be a really, really serious issue for them to divorce and not honor the Holy Sacrament of Marriage….

Yeah – a serious monetary issue. Kim-Skank saw the marriage as a way to promote her reality show and garner uber publicity, after which she dumps the Neanderthal spouse once the cameras have stopped rolling, the director has called “CUT!”, and the check has been cashed.

In previews for the yet-to-be-aired show, fans have already gotten a peek at the short-lived marriage.

"How am I going to have my career and live in Minnesota?" Kim asks Kris when he suggests in one show that they move away from Hollywood to his hometown.

However,he’s never run a national corporation, never held public office, has no stanceon foreign policy, no plans on how to deal with the occupation in Iraq or thewar in Afghanistan, no viable job creation plan, and dodges questions on socialissues.

But hehas absolutely no qualms on being an ignorant braggart staking his claim on theUS presidency.

Whatpushed my buttons this weekend? One werethe reports regarding his statement to a group of supporters in Tennessee lastSaturday on proposed border fences. "It's going to be 20 feet high," Cain said. "It's goingto have barbed wire on the top. It's going to be electrified. And there's goingto be a sign on the other side saying, 'It will kill you -- Warning.'" Thecrowd cheered, joining the apparent movement of partisan GOP crowdsenthusiastic about state sanctioned killing.

Not only have the majority of economists,business groups, independent and financial analysts say that this proposal isnot viable and will throw the country into serious decline, but also that itwill further reduce taxes for the rich while placing MORE tax burdens on thepoor and working middle class.

Whenpressed that his proposed tax plan will raise taxes on common food items suchas bread, milk, etc., he said that the poor should just “eat used food and buyused goods.”

Have American voters gotten too stupid to vote?

This question has plagued me on and off over the years. I mean, to me – a registered Democrat –can it be anymore painfully obvious that the policies of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) are what’s best for the country? Both socially and fiscally?

On the other hand, to registered Republicans, they are looking at us and thinking the same thing. THEIR social and fiscal policies are what’s in the best interest of the country….curse you lefties and liberals!!!.

But that’s not the question. Are American voters really too “stupid and vapid”, incapable of rationalizing the debates, thoughtfully mulling over the issues, making an informed decision when casting their vote?

Unfortunately – they are.

Google the phrase “are American voters ignorant/stupid” and the plethora of answers examining the issue is scary. Reading through the search results one arrives at the general consensus that there seems to be a lack of curiosity of voters to voluntarily educate themselves about the issues.

But there are rational (?) explanations as to why this is so.

Americans are getting what little information they have about political candidates from 30-second campaign commercials that's insufficient as a basis for deciding how you're going to vote and what you think about politics and policies. Previously, people got most of their information from newspapers – a much better source than opinionated cable news networks that operate solely on ratings and a 24-hour news cycle.

In the past when voters were members of large mass groups like political parties or labor unions, a voter’s party bosses or labor bosses helped guide their thinking about politics, and they had a better grasp of who or what was going to best help them butter their bread better.

However, in today’s deregulated competitive capitalistic society like ours where there is a great emphasis on entertainment, people are not inclined to sit down and study a newspaper and figure out what's actually going on in politics. Also, there is a great lack of knowledge or understanding of America’s very complex political system. The first is that a certain amount of political ignorance is an inevitable by-product of America's unique political environment. No European country has as many elections, as many elected offices, as complex a maze of overlapping governmental jurisdictions, as the American system. Most Americans do not know enough about the different branches of government, how they work, and how bills are legislated and passed. But should these explanations help us forgive the mass ignorance?

NO.

If we are waging costly wars and taking innocent lives in the name of democracy then the burden of responsibility is also on us to practice that democracy to its fullest.

American voters are some of the laziest in the world. Of the total amount of voting age citizens in the USA only 71% are registered to vote. Of that number of registered voters only 41% voted in the 2010 elections – the lowest turnout in the developed world. However – that does NOT stop the US from having the nuttiest and most vocal political extremists. They are the ones who are turning out in droves and casting their votes for their equally nutty candidates who get elected to office and propose and enact extremist politics.

Remember the entire debt-ceiling debacle? That’s a walk in the park compared to legislature that will be proposed in the near future.

But back to the American voter. Ignorance is not bliss.

We have a responsibility to thoroughly exam the candidates and their response to the issues. Catchy slogans and simple (probably too simple) answers to revenue and tax collection is NOT the solution. In the past decade American voters have proven themselves easily swayed by simplistic answers and wanting to “have a beer with the guy” as criteria for selecting their next president (George ‘Dubya’ Bush).

However, hope seems to be on the horizon. People are tired of their current quality of life and living standards and begun to explore their rights to gather and voice their concerns. First was the Tea Party movement, now we have the Occupy Wall Street protests making it obvious to those who care to listen that it cannot be business as usual.

Things have got to change. Sixty percent of the wealth can NOT be controlled by one percent of society. And people are tired of working two jobs just to pay the necessary bills, or struggling so hard just to make ends meet.

Maybe the American voters do get it after all.

Only the elections of 2012 will tell.

Today,a Sunday, I actually hauled my lazy ass out of bed before 8 am, left my hoveland went to watch the 34^th Annual Chicago Marathon – otherwise knownas the Bank of America Chicago Marathon.

What –you thought I was going to tell you I participated? Mi?! Wid mi big belly? Run inna dis yahot weadda’?! Is how long unnu know me?*kiss teet* To rass….

[TRANSLATIONFOR MY NON-PATOIS FRIENDS: Me? Run in a major marathon with my grotesquelyenlarged stomach? In these hot andsteamy temperatures? Don’t you know meand my diva ways and my refusal to perspire and ruin my foundation?! I thought you’d have had enough time to knowabout my idiosyncrasies by now! *hissing sound* Damn….]

TheChicago Marathon, along with the marathons of Boston, New York, London andBerlin, is considered one of the five World Marathon Majors. This yearly event initially began in 1977 asthe Mayor Daley Marathon and has grown since then from a mere 4,200participants in its initial run, to its current limited participation of 45thousand runners. Participants of themarathon came from over 100 countries, for most of whom it was their firstvisit to the Windy City.

Thecompetition – with individual prize money of over $100 thousand for the topwinners – generates $170 million towards the local economy on the race weekend,with charities that participate in orare affiliated with the marathon raising up to $11 million and more for theirinstitutions.

Themarathon, a 26-plus mile course that winds through the city of Chicago, goesthrough some 26 city neighborhoods such as Lincoln Park, Lakeview, China Town,Old Town, and Pilsen.

(Pilsen? Why does that name sound familiar?)

Becausethat’s the neighborhood that I live in. Yup, the marathon course runs no more than four blocks from myhovel. It was time for me to stopbitching about having nothing to do, so I got out of bed and walked up the roadto see what the hoopla was all about.

Iarrived at mile-marker 19 located on 18^th Street between AshlandAvenue and Blue Island a little after 9 am, an hour-and-a-half after the startof the race by Grant Park in Downtown Chicago. The first lead runners were just coming by and the sparse crowd ofspectators and I clapped and cheered them on. Then, after 10 to 15 minute delays, there would be groups of five or sorunners turning the corner. These werethe serious marathon runners – all lean and sinewy, not an ounce of fat insight. As time went on the delays grewshorter and shorter, and the groups of runners grew larger and larger untilsuddenly the street was teeming with runners. All shapes and sizes. Young andold. Physically able andhandicapped. Running on two legs or onprosthetics. As a group, as part of aclub, or just solo. Running forcharities, running to raise funds for special causes.

Bythis time the crowd has swelled, the neighborhood stores had cranked up themusic, and the on-lookers were a’ hooting and a’ hollering.

Someparticipants were running for personal bests. Some were running for personal gains. Others ran for a cause – whether it be for cancer, in memory of adeceased loved one, a personal triumph over illness, etc.

Onething I noticed (besides the young,succulent and juicy 20-something corn-fed farm boys running with no shirt on)was the transition of the athletes physique as the race progressed. The serious contenders in the beginning wereall lanky, wiry and lean; the spurts of runners that followed were a littlechunkier and fleshier looking. Then themajority of the runners after that were all fit and came in all sizes andshapes but were mainly of average build. I just thought it was an interesting flow that coincided with theprogression of the race.

I leftafter nearly two hours – I mean, there is only so much you can do watchingpeople run by you – and returned home with a positive feeling of community andparticipation. I mean – isn’t this oneof the reasons I live in a big city?

Nexton my agenda – should I or shouldn’t I participate in the Occupy Wall Streetprotest in Chicago……

WHAT'S WRONG WITH BEING A LIBERAL?

Recently, there has been focus on activists of the current “OccupyWall Street” protest underway. Themovement – being held to show opposition to the current financial setup thatmany feel allow rich corporations andwealthy individuals to take advantage of taxpayers and ordinary citizens – isgaining ground not only in New York, the city of its origin, but also in othermajor cities such as Chicago, Seattle, Los Angles, Washington DC, Boston – justto name a few.

These protesters feel that enough is enough, and that those in financial power need to be held accountable. Unlike the Tea Party, which blames big government for America's economic problems, the Occupy Wall Street movement holds big business responsible for the current state of the global economy. "We have spent $3-trillion to send our kids to war," a group of older women protesters chant. "Well no, not all the kids, just the brown, the black, the poor." All to benefit lucrative military contracts for corporations and to obtain rights to large oil fields located in Iraq for rich oil companies.

Some media houses have brandished these protesters as ‘unwashed,tree-hugging liberals’ with no organizedmessage – as if reverting to a time in the past where similar protests wereheld by those against the Vietnam War ofthe 60s/70s.

And it got me to thinking – what is wrong with being aliberal? Why are people so afraid ofchange?

I Googled the word ‘liberal’ and got this definition from theOxford Dictionary Online: open to new behavior or opinions and willingto discard traditional values; favorable to or respectful of individual rightsand freedoms; (in a political context) favoring maximum individual liberty inpolitical and social reform; [attributive] (of education) concerned mainly withbroadening a person’s general knowledge and experience, rather than withtechnical or professional training.

So a liberal is one who embraces change, respectful of individualrights, looks to education to broaden one’s knowledge and temper theirexperiences.

And this is wrong…….how?

We’re all liberals – whether we acknowledge it or not. We all are born as innocent babies with aclean slate of inexperience. Througheducation - whether book-learned or life taught - and personal mistakes weadapt and become individuals. We all –ALL – strive for a better life. This isthe fundamental of being a liberal. That is what allowed us as humans totransform ourselves from living as wandering tribes flung across the globe,into the organized and modern world community of today. Liberal thinking is what also brought usimprovements to our daily lives; it is what drives inventors to bring us newproducts to make our lives easier. It isthe forward thinking of liberals that gave us the personal computer, theinternet, the mobile phone, etc.

I also Googled the word ‘conservative’ and got THIS response: holdingto traditional attitudes and values and cautious about change or innovation,typically in relation to politics or religion; a person who is averse to changeand holds to traditional values and attitudes, typically in relation topolitics.

Ah-HA! So being aconservative is akin to identifying as an uptight, close-minded, un-flinchingbigot? I always thought so. Conservatives tend to be very religious,dismissive of science, education and book learning. Rather than question or probe unexplainedevents and look to logic and science for answers, they tend to embraceignorance and seek other-worldly explanations and fairy tales to rationalizewhat they can’t explain.

Conservatives and their thinking were the reason that WesternEurope went through the Dark Ages between the 6^th and the 13^thcenturies, a period of intellectual darkness and barbarity, a time of ignoranceand superstition. To question thestandard then was seen as heresy and punishable by death. (Hmmmm, sound eerily similar to the currentTexas penal system, doesn’t it?)

Do you know who benefitted the most during the Dark Ages? The Roman Catholic Church and the rich lordswho embraced the serf and feudalism system.

Very similar to the rich corporations and evangelical racistscurrently elected in Congress and identify themselves as Republicans and TeaParty representatives.

And they say history doesn’t repeat itself…..

I waswrapping up my activities for the night in preparation for bed and decided tocheck Google News before I shut down the laptop for the evening. To my shock there was the announcement: “Apple Co-Founder Steve Jobs Dead at56”.

Okay –I know that he was sick after fighting a long battle with pancreatic cancerwhen he resigned from Apple in August but I didn’t know that it was thatbad. Totally caught me off-guard.

Yeah,I still have my criticisms about Apple, it’s (over-hyped) products and it’sKool-aid drinking herd of iSheep followers, but I had a TON of respect forSteve Jobs.

Jobswas the offspring of un-wed college students, and was adopted by parents whostruggled to make ends meet. He attendedcollege only for one semester before dropping out. After a short stint with Atari, he co-foundedApple with high-school friend Steve Wozniak and a few other investors. During his initial tenure Apple releasediconic personal computers such as the Lisa and the Macintosh that revolutionizedpersonal computing, and taught the world the tech meaning of the words icon, mouse and GUI.

Areputed egomaniac with a reputation of being “difficult and temperamental” towork with he was forced out of the company in 1985 after which the companystruggled to find its footing. Howeverin 1997 Jobs returned to lead Apple back to the top. Under Jobs leadership the then strugglingApple Computer unleashed its line of “i” products beginning with the iMac,followed by the iPod, then the iPhone, the iPad – just to name a few. Today, Apple Computer is one of the mostvalued companies in the world.

SteveJobs had a vision of how technology should be used in our daily lives. Through persistence and creative marketing hemade a change to the world and those who shared it with him.

Did Apple stumble by releasing the iPhone 4S instead of an iPhone5?

Today Apple unveiled its latest version of the iPhone – the iPhone 4S - that will go on sale on October 14th in the US.

But a nagging question surfaced after the big “reveal”: did Apple take a huge gamble by releasing an upgraded iPhone 4 that runs on a 3G network instead of the much anticipated iPhone 5 for 4G network?

I think so. So do many others. Apple’s stock price fell 5% after the unveiling of the latest iPhone (but rebounded slightly by the end of closing today).

An (alleged) innovator Apple brought glamour to the smart-phone category with the initial introduction of the iPhone in January of 2007. Before then, smart-phones were mostly used by frantic businessmen on the go or by geeks for nerdy multi-tasking, and were seen as functional in a clinical way.

With the release of the iPhone there came the combination of not only a mobile phone and Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), but the dazzle of an MP3 player for your favorite tunes, applications for games, GPS functions, entertainment, etc. Apple definitely stepped up the game amongst smart-phone manufacturers, and although the battle for the number one spot has been fierce, Apple always ended on top with new releases every 8 months or so.

Then internet juggernaut Google entered the race with their Linux-based Android platform and the market has not been the same since. And Apple – despite its large number of rabid followers – should be very, very afraid.

Here’s a few reasons why:

Since its introduction in 2008 Android has fast become the preferred Operating System for mobile phones mainly because Android based phones are fast, user friendly, and, more importantly when compared against the iPhone – very affordable. While Apple paranoidly clings to its proprietary iOS, other smart-phone manufacturers are cutting production costs by embracing Android technology which is provided to them by Google at the lowest cost possible – FREE.

Although the iPhone by itself currently holds the largest share of the smart-phone market, its overall market share drops dramatically (18%) when compared against the market share of all Android based smart-phones (43%). And Apple’s share of the global mobile phone market is only 5% when matched against global mobile phone giants such as Nokia, Samsung, LG and others – others willing to use Android over Apple’s iOS. Because of this Android’s market share is growing three times faster than Apple.

The yet-to-be-released iPhone 4S is basically a tweaked clunky iPhone 4 with a newer camera and upgraded 3.5 inch screen, a fused battery and available in either 16GB, 32GB and 64G models (the price dramatically increases per gigabyte). Hold up that iPhone against currently available Android-based slim-body phones with large 4.3 in touch-screens, upgradable memory via flexible MicroSD cards slots and replaceable long-life batteries and the iPhone begins to look like a relic from the last decade - literally.

The final flaw in the new iPhone is it’s connection speed. Android phones are have been available for use on the screaming-fast 4G networks since May of this year; Apple stuck to the slower 3G technology with the yet-to-be-released iPhone 4S.

Using a 3G phone versus a 4G phone is similar to watching the race between the tortoise and the hare, but this time the hare wins. Seriously – what do you think non-rabid Apple consumers are going to go for when shopping for a new phone – a sexy, slim, fast, affordable phone….or a clunky, proprietary-laden, frustratingly slow shiny abacus?

And the best is yet to come.

Remember – Google is purchasing Motorola’s mobile-phone division with plans to produce their own Android-based phones.

Apple – I think you missed the mark on this one.

MOVIE REVIEW: "The Help “and "50/50"....and other releases.

Aftera long, LONG dry spell of not seeing any recent releases in the cinema due topersonal restraints I have now committed myself to getting out of the hovelmore often on the weekends and trying to enjoying what the city has to offer. I mean – what’s the point of living in one ofthe largest cities in the US if you don’t partake in the museums, fairs,festivals, etc?

Anyhoo– a few weeks ago I got to see the much heralded movie THE HELP. The critics had been raving about it – sayingit was a definite Oscar contender, and that Viola Davis’ acting will make her apossible candidate for an award. Withthis in mind I went in to my nearby cinema in the city (600 N Michigan – it’sthe closest and easiest to get to) with much expectations and was…..a littleunderwhelmed.

Theplot surround the ambitions of a young college graduate (Emma Stone as‘Skeeter’) who returns to her home in Mississippi in the 1960s. After getting a job writing a weekly columnin the local newspaper, she turns her attention to idea she had for a book -compiling the stories of the local domestic help who were all blacks, and thestruggles they faced with civil rights and the fight for equality in theirdaily lives. She approaches her friend’smaid Aibileen (Viola Davis) with her idea, but received a firm “no” to anyparticipation. After much resistance,the domestics eventually share their stories and Lord! You are faced with the harsh truth how JimCrow laws enforced in the south kept black Americans a low rung above slaveryin the terms of civil liberties and personal freedoms. Although powerful and very moving for thefirst two-thirds of the film, the movie began to falter slightly in the lastthird – trying to decide if it was a comedy based on the antics of Minny(played by the vivacious Octavia Spencer), or if the film should end as a dramaportraying the hardships of being black in America in the 1960s.

All-in-allTHE HELP is a good film and really does justice in it’s accurate portrayal oflife in the 60s. I give it 7 stars outof 10.

Iventured into the city again last night to watch the much acclaimed film 50/50.Based on a true story the film surrounds a 27 year old NPR editor Adam (JosephGordon-Levitt) who learns he has a rare form of cancer, and how his boisterousbest friend Kyle (Seth Rogen), his girlfriend Rachel (Bryce Dallas Howard) andmother (Anjelica Houston) deals with his battle against the disease. While receiving treatment and chemotherapyfor his cancer he undergoes therapy with a young, inexperienced butenthusiastic psychiatric intern Katherine (Anna Kendrick) who finds itdifficult to reach through to her patient. Thoughtful, funny but serious, this movie is an original change from thisyear’s releases that delivers on its promise of a good experience. (Note: if you go to see this excellent film don’t forget to bring a hankie orsmall rag to stifle the sobs when the emotional parts hit.)

MeanwhileI have been watching other past releases on DVD such as the romantic comedyBRIDESMAIDS which totally lived up to its hilarious expectations of a story ofa down-on-her-luck maid of honor and her struggle with the preparations of herbest friend’s wedding (a must see); THOR – which although did not reach thecritical levels set by other superhero films such as IRONMAN or BATMAN redeemeditself with the 90-second shot of leading man Chris Hemsworth walking aroundshirtless (I literally stopped breathing for a few minutes during that scene);PAUL – about the smart-mouth alien hitch-hiker who enlists the help of twoBritish vacationers touring sites of famous UFO sightings to get him to hismeeting point to return to his home planet; GREEN LANTERN – 114 minutes of mylife totally wasted on a mish-mash of (not-so) special effects all done in anoxious green hue; I AM NUMBER FOUR – an alien-on-earth romantic adventure copyof the Twilight movies; Disney’s TANGLED – the animated re-telling of theRapunzel fairytale which is totally delightful (I even got a little ferklemptat the end); and Disney’s PROM – a sweet with a written-for-TV-feeling movieabout the one night in high school that seems to have scarred millions ofAmerican teenagers.

In arecent BBC interview financial independent trader Alessio Rastani created aninstant internet firestorm when he claimed that “governments do not rule theworld, Goldman Sachs rules the world.” Answeringquestions about world leaders' response to the eurozone debt crisis, the34-year-old said traders "know the stock market is finished. The euro, asfar as they're concerned, they don't really care".

“Formost traders, we don't really care that much how they're going to fix theeconomy, how they're going to fix the whole situation -- our job is to makemoney from it," he said. "Personally I've been dreaming of this moment for three years. Ihave a confession, which is I go to bed every night, I dream of anotherrecession."

Hewent on to advise people worried about the European debt crisis not to wait onthe government to come up with a solution, and predicted that in 12 months theworld economy will be in such a state that people’s savings will be wipedout.

Sincethe interview some have claimed that Rastani was a hoaxer with a US basedprotest group called The Yes Men trying to stir up controversy, but the grouphas since confirmed that he was NOT affiliated with them in any way. Also, the BBC stands by the interview andclaims that detailed research was conducted on his background before he wasinvited to be interviewed.

Meanwhile,response to this interview has been mixed. Generally there has been justified outrage at such heartless statements,but some are just shrugging their shoulders and acknowledging that what he saidis just the plain truth.

BBCbusiness editor Robert Peston said on Twitter that Rastani had merely"voiced what traders working for big firms and funds say in private,"while the Financial Times asked in a blog entry "Do traders dream ofdefaulting Greeks?"

Personally,I think that the BBC business editor is right – this IS what traders pray andhope for in private. In this day ofunregulated financial excesses the rich bankers and corporations are gettinggreedier and greedier, making money not from good old fashioned hard work frommanufacturing, production, trade and other tried-and-true methods, but fromsmoke screens and mirrors as they push papers, bonds and other complex financial“products” they dream up for this nightmare called the world economy.

AndYES, I believe that it is the devil’s minions – conservatives, Republicans, TeaParty racists and right wingers – who are the vessel for which this is beingcarried out.

I’vesaid it before and I’ll say it again – the rich have declared war on the middleand working class of the world and it’s time for us to fight back. And that fight starts with contacting yourelected representative and letting them know exactly how you feel about thecurrent economic situation and frankly if they don’t do something about it –VOTE THEM OUT!!!

DISCRIMINATORY "DON'T ASK, DON'T TELL" LAW REPEALED

FINALLY.

After18 years in force the hateful “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” – or DADT - law wasfinally repealed from the law books at 12:01 am Tuesday September 2011 and isno longer enforceable. DADT was a measure put in place in 1993 during theClinton administration as a compromise on gays serving in the military betweenthen President Clinton (who had campaigned on the promise that persons canserve in the military regardless of sexual orientation) and generals of thearmed forces. The policy was supposed toprohibit military personnel from discriminating against or harassing closetedhomosexual or bisexual service members or applicants, while barring openly gay,lesbian, or bisexual persons from military service.

However,the policy was abused by military officials during its tenure and was used as atool to dishonorably discharge members of the armed forces solely on thesuspicion that a soldier may be gay. Italso led to “witch-hunts” where persons suspected to be homosexual weremonitored and persecuted until evidence was obtained to prove cause fordismissal.

Over thelife of DADT over 13 thousand service men were dishonorably discharged underthis policy. It has been reported anddocumented that a number of those discharged were personnel integral to thecurrent fight against terrorists such as linguists, military analysts, trainedpilots, etc.

Howeversupport for the repeal of DADT grew over the years. Now, up to 70% of polled Americans favor gaysand lesbians openly serving in the military. Then, after a few failed attempts, it was the Democrat-led 111^thCongress under the leadership of Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Ca) and SenateMajority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nv) that got the bill for repeal passed throughboth houses of congress and sent to the president for signature. In December 2010 President Obama signed the billinto law to began the repeal of DADT after certification of readiness was givenfrom all generals and the Secretary of Defense. Certification was completed in June 2011 and the date for final repealset for September.

Side-note:up to December 2010 doddering ol’ grandpa Senator John McCain (R-Az.) wasagainst repealing DADT. He was one of asmall minority of elected officials (mostly Republicans) who voiced theirconcerns about repealing DADT – and even called for either its continuation, orthe strengthening its measures.

Yahknow – I don’t want to go off-topic but John McCain has turned into a realclassic DOUCHEBAG since the 2008 elections. I will never, EVER, forgive him for unleashing that publicity-hungrybitch Sarah Palin on the American psyche.

Butback to the repeal of DADT.

Fromthis point on, gay men and women can opening serve in the armed forces withoutfear of persecution or the need to conceal one’s sexuality. This is a new frontier in the fight forEQUALITY, and another chapter in the fight for human rights.

PresidentBarack Hussein Obama on Monday will put forth a proposal to raise the incometax rate on millionaires and billionaires in line with the average Joe. This proposal is nick-named the ‘Buffet Rule’after multi-billionaire Warren Buffet’s statement that the rich pay far less intaxes that the average American.

“My friends andI have been coddled long enough by a billionaire-friendly Congress,” Mr. Buffetwrote in an opinion article in The New York Times, a complaint he has repeatedin talks and media interviews since. “It’s time for our government to getserious about shared sacrifice.”

Now,let me make this clear for all the dunces who, although they struggle daily topay their own bills, are brainwashed by right-wing media to protect theinterests of the rich because “you might one day be rich yourself with thenew-and-all-improved American Dream” propaganda bullshit: this is NOT a general increase in taxes onthe general population. This is arestructuring of the tax code so that those making a higher income pay the same– not more than or an unfair amount– THE SAME tax rate as the middle class ofAmerica, okay?

Alreadythe Republicans are calling this “class warfare”.

Republicansfavor EVEN MORE tax cuts for the rich claiming that it will help pave the wayfor more investment and job creation.

Really? Mr. Ryan - exactly how many jobs have beencreated over the past ten years due to the implementation of theRepublican-endorsed Bush tax cuts? Thosevery same tax cuts STILL IN PLACE….but not creating ANY jobs in this tougheconomy.

Youknow what it’s creating instead? Recordprofits for rich corporations on the backs of fewer workers for the sameworkload. (Read the article in the New York Times: "What is Business Waiting For?")

Ohyeah – this is class warfare alright, but the rich started it. And it’s time they pay.

WHAT DOES 9/11 MEAN TO YOU?

September 11, 2001 was a memorable day for the entire world - for all the wrong reasons. We watched transfixed in horror at what was happening to the World Trade Center in New York that day - powerless to do anything. Not only were the WTC twin-towers attacked that ultimately led to their collapse, but other attacks were executed: one carried out on the Pentagon, another thwarted with the downing of United Flight 93 due to the courageous actions of passengers on board that flight. In the days that followed the news got progressively worse as the estimated number of persons who died in the towers grew - including way too many heroic first responders who gave up their lives in their attempt to save others.

A really, really, really terrible day. One I wish I could forget.

But we can't.

We can't forget not just because we must always - ALWAYS - remember the brave innocent souls that perished on that fateful day, but because the networks and cable media are ensuring that they will have emotional IN-YOU-FACE coverage during this week leading up to the tenth anniversary of the attacks this Sunday.

I'm not sure I like that. (Why are they doing it - ratings? To see which network can out-memorialize the other?)

One reason I don't approve of the constant coverage/re-hash is that 9/11 was a traumatic day for a lot of people world-wide. We basically witnessed thousands of people violently murdered right before our very eyes - an emotional trauma that I personally have not recovered from. To this day there are people still unable to cope with the emotions that come with watching video footage of that day. We now all suffer from some form of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in one way or another.

Think not? Try watching interviews and footage of the event and tell me you do NOT get suddenly emotional and choked up - THEN deny you suffer from PTSD. This constant coverage and "remembrance" the way the networks are doing it is akin to water-boarding.

That's the problem, We need to remember, not re-live. This week-long coverage of the tenth anniversary of 9/11 and repeated showing of the towers collapsing is helping us heal how....? Did we do an inward look at why we were attacked, and why they hated America - and Americans - so much?

No.

Instead, those in power at the time took full advantage of the situation and led our country into two expensive wars at the cost of hundreds of thousands of lives while leaving our economy fragile and artificially bloated - vulnerable to collapse as it did in 2008.

(Some theorize THAT was the ultimate attack that bin Laden planned: "How Bin Laden Failed To Wreck the U.S. Economy")

The event is now a part of us - but have we grown from it? The only visible change the attack made to our lives is being unceremoniously frisked by the TSA every time we have to board an airplane - and even THAT system is not being conducted uniformly, and has major flaws.

We need to move on. NOT FORGET - just move on. Make the pain a part of our heritage - not sit around every year at this time rending our garments and putting ashes on our head.

Move-on by passing the bill that extend help to the first responders that are now suffering health problems form the toxic building materials used in the WTC towers.

Move-on by aiding those families who lost loved ones on that fateful day.

Move-on by examining our foreign policies and STOP being the world's policeman.

Move-on by ceasing funding to countries that support terrorists such as Pakistan, Sudan, and Syria.

But I digress.

This weekend, instead of subjecting yourself to a nervous breakdown try and do this for the tenth anniversary of 9/11: remember, not re-live. Pay homage how ever you want - just don't get carried up in the media ratings frenzy.

Move-on but never forget.

PRESIDENT OBAMA'S SPEECH TO CONGRESS ON HIS JOBS BILL

Wasn’tTHAT interesting?

Didyou see it?

Beforethe president began his speech I wondered if he was going to take his patented‘kumbayah’ approach about working it out between political parties, yada, yada,yada.

Hedidn’t.

Hetook – what I thought – was a bold and at times impassioned and very direct“in-your-face” stance with those troublesome Republicans. He basically challenged them to find faultwith the bill – “The American Jobs Act” – that was crafted based on pastproposals submitted by both Democrats AND Republicans. He laid out the framework of the draft billsuch as tax deductions for small businesses that hire persons unemployed formore than six months, and tax breaks for companies that increase their payrollby $50 million or more. The bill alsohas provisions for extending unemployment benefits for those out of work, andfunding for infrastructure building and renovation. “Why should China outspend us in building newroads, railways and airports?” he asked.

Theplan also calls for more breaks on the payroll tax for individuals and familiesmaking up to $50,000.

Thepresident also took a very strong stance on the low tax rates on the rich, andclosing loopholes for subsidizing the oil companies. Her made a very clear point that congressshould be working for the Americantaxpayers and not the lobbyists for wealthy. He reiterated a grumble that has been on the lips of the disenfranchisedin America – that the wealthy should pay their fare share in taxes as much asthe poor and middle class already does.

This is a quiteclever, almost sly speech. Under the guise of holding out a friendly hand toRepublicans, and going some way to meet their concerns on red tape and thelike, he is offering them a chalice which they can't possibly drink. But ifthey don't, they look unreasonable. Or so he hopes.

TheRepublican side of the House – of course – sat in stony silence most of thetime. To me it seem they knew that theywere being challenged and chided. Iexpected nothing less than unwillingness from them, and fully expect them tostart putting up roadblocks to ensuring that this bill fails.

Let’ssee what the coming weeks bring.

AMERICAN EVANGELICALS: THE NEW TERRORIST MOVEMENT

Hmmmm, I don't know why I had this article I wrote in Dec '09 archived under DRAFTS in my blog but it is well worth reading:

From the start of the Christian movement over 2000 years ago (so named for followers of the teachings of Jesus Christ) there has been conflict between members of Christian churches struggling to establish their cause, and members of other established religions of those times. For example: those who worshiped the deities of Roman and Greek lore, pagan observation, and rituals in barbarian Europe, just to name a few.

After the acceptance of the Christian Church by Constantine the First that eventually led to widespread establishment of the Roman Catholic Church, Christians - despite their history of persecutions in the early days of their movement - declared 'holy wars' in the form of Crusades upon so-called infidels of the Middle East during the 1000s to the 1200s.

The need to fight these holy wars on other religions by Christians died down in the 16th to 19th centuries due to the splintering and fractions within the Christian movement itself, when other sub-churches such as Lutheranism and Anglicans broke away from the Roman Catholic Church and established their faiths in Europe. While still not accepted nor understood, other non-Christan religions were tolerated and even accepted; Judaism was eventually established in mainland Europe up until the 1930s.

However, in the last part of the 20th century there seemed to be a resurgence in acts of terror by 'the new Christians' or 'evangelicals' as they are commonly known, to get their Christian message across.

Born in Great Britain in the 1700s, evangelicalism was a Christian movement based on tenants that one had to be 'born again' to fully accept the teachings of their prophet Jesus Christ, have a high regard for biblical authority on how to lead their daily lives - among other things. While seen as a running joke during it's infancy in the USA in the mid-20th century, the evangelical movement saw a jump in their membership under conservative leaders such as President Ronald Reagan and President George 'Dubya' Bush of the 21 century.

Buoyed by growing support in the public opinion in the 1980s American conservative evangelicals began a slow but steady path towards extremism. They garnered influence on elected officials on one of their main concerns - abortion - and noisily objected to what they saw as invasion on other areas of life that they deemed unfit or un-Christian in their biblical eyes such as gay rights, teaching or acceptance of religions other than Christianity in public schools or at gatherings of congress, global warming, evolution or 'Darwinism' - just to name a few. They also favored promoting the teaching of abstinence as a form of birth control rather than accede to conventional birth control methods and sound sex education.

Then came September 11, 2001. The events of that day not only changed the face of the world stage, but also seem to have push American evangelicals over the edge. Anyone practicing any religion other than Christianity were seen as 'an enemy of the Union', and alternate lifestyles were used as an example of the coming Apocalypse to further political agenda (eg. the issue of gay rights as its' impact on the 2004 presidential election between George Bush and John Kerry). Evangelicals and right wing conservatives - now barely distinguishable from each other - saw an explosion on the airwaves with radio icons such as Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck leading the charges, and the Fox News Channel promoting their causes and anything other being deemed as a threat to national security.

The terrorism aspect came can be evidenced by attacks and bombing of abortion clinics around the nation, accompanied with proud assassinations of baby killers, a term used for doctors who performed abortions, the most recent being the murder of Dr George Tiller in Kansas by Scott Roeder in the name of Jesus Christ.

Others fighting the unofficial holy war for Christianity include Erik Prince - founder and head of the infamous Blackwater Security Group - or Xe as they like to be now called during a re-branding exercise to remove themselves from the controversy that the Blackwater name has brought out in the past. According to sources inside the company Prince - a devout Christian - has declared a war against Islam, and is using his company's precense in Iraq and Afghanistan to eradicate Moslems in mass murders as such revealed during as recent drone strikes in Pakistan. These recent tactics are not much different from the jihads - or holy war in Islam - being declared by Moslms extremists against Western civilizations. However, for whatever reason, Christian extremism is not being veiwed as acts of terrorism, nor are they being compared - in their accurate categoru - as a holy jihad, or to use the correct terminology - holy crusade.

Could this be due to the de-demonization of the word 'crusade' to mean tent revivals by evangelicals? Whatever the reason, until this subtefuge christian war is treated as such, we will never have any semblance of world harmony.

Logorama is a 17-minute animated film written and directed by H5/ François Alaux, Hervé de Crécy and Ludovic Houplain, and produced by Autour de Minuit. The film depicts events in a stylized Los Angeles, and is told entirely through the use of more than 2,500 contemporary and historical logos and mascots.

The film won the Prix Kodak at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film at the 82nd Academy Awards.

It's an amazing piece of work and should be watched to appreciate the talents creativity can take us to.

What's wrong with being a 'liberal'?

You hear about them on the news all the time. You hear the term used in the movies, about those “damn liberals!” who are running around trying to change things…rallying against the ‘establishment’. You hear the reference used in political discussions to describe areas of the country that vote ‘liberal’ or ‘conservative’. It’s seen by some as a bad thing to be – liberalism will lead to marijuana smoking, hemp loving hippies who will lead the world in fornication and other impure acts.

So what exactly is a liberal? According to the Princeton Online Dictionary a liberal is a person who has:

• broad: showing or characterized by broad-mindedness; "a broad political stance"; "generous and broad sympathies"; "a liberal newspaper"; "tolerant ...

• having political or social views favoring reform and progress

• tolerant of change; not bound by authoritarianism, orthodoxy, or tradition

• a person who favors a political philosophy of progress and reform and the protection of civil liberties

• a person who favors an economic theory of laissez-faire and self-regulating markets

And what is wrong with that? I’d rather live a life of progress that embraces change – or evolve. I think by doing this we will enable mankind to be more…human.

As a society or species we HAVE to evolve in order to ensure the survival of our species. Without change we would NOT have progressed as far as we did; we left the Dark Ages due to liberal enlightenment that lead to the Renaissance. The Dark Ages – we learned – was a period where liberal thought languished after the fall of the Roman Empire – a free spirited and progressive society. The Dark Ages was a result of not only the Huns and Barbarian Rule, but also due to the strict conservative principles of the Holy Roman Empire of the time that discouraged education and learning because it was a way to keep control of the unwashed masses (literally). Without liberals such as Michelangelo, Leonardo de Vinci and Cristobal Columbus life today would have been dismal.

In the last century forward thinkers such as Steve Jobs of Apple, Bill Gates of Microsoft, Gene Roddenberry of Star Trek fame, and those pioneering scientists who invented the internet in the 1960s, we would not have the vision or ability to communicate the way we do today; our life would have been a lot more complicated.

(Okay, who here can honestly remember how we got things done without fax machines, email or a computer? How on EARTH did we manage without cell phones?!)

To me, being a progressive liberal is a good thing and not something to be ashamed of.

Now, what does it mean to be a conservative?

• resistant to change

• having social or political views favoring conservatism

• cautious: avoiding excess; "a conservative estimate"

• a person who is reluctant to accept changes and new ideas

• button-down: unimaginatively conventional; "the dull-grey world of business"- Newsweek

• bourgeois: conforming to the standards and conventions of the middle class; "a bourgeois mentality"

Ugh.

How predictable and boring. We just as well might have stopped after we switched from black & white to color television, and kept white gloves in fashion. Left to conservatives we’d still be using fountain pens and the Guttenberg Press to get things done.

It seems that there is a terrible misconception out there amongst the public about gay men: because we are sexually attracted to men we must think and act like prissy women.

So wrong.

The majority of this misconception – believe it or not – is commonly found among women. They perceive gay men as ‘safe’ and reason that because men are attracted to men they are not a threat to their individual person or sexuality. This leads to a mental neutering of the gay men in the minds of women who expect them to act – and think – as kin women. Heterosexually men are not so much misunderstanding of gay men as much as they feel threatened, but they perceive gay men as wanting to be and act as women.

Boy is that every so wrong!

Gay men like to be one thing first and foremost: MEN. Second to that is our desire to sleep with other men.

That’s it. Nothing more.

Let me just clear up a few errors taken for granted:

GAY MEN ALL HAVE FASHION SENSE. Really? News to me and the rest of the gay world. Some gay men are colorblind or live in a world of tan and white. We’re not all on top of the latest trends or music, are born with an instinct for colors, know the latest craze or artiste on the billboards. We just a little more apt to express our appreciation of the finer things that life has to offer. And NO, we do not like frills and flounces. Gay men come in all shapes, sizes and careers; they’re in construction as much as retail, in home remodeling as much as offices; in maintenance or on oil drills as much as in the army. And they blend in because they are…….men.

ALL GAY MEN ARE EITHER DEMURE OR REALLY GIRLY. No, we like noise. And lots of it. Ever been to a gay club in your life? We like then packed, hung and NOISY! And we are just as lecherous and lewd with the male strippers as hetero men are with female strippers. We’re LOUD. We’re CRUDE. We like making insensitive jokes and comments to each other. And boy do we like to muthafucking cuss like there is no tomorrow. And just as much as straight men like to boast to their fellow mates about how they “banged that chick last night!”, gay men also like to boast about how got to ‘suck that..”….well, you get the idea.

ALL GAY MEN ARE NEAT. God, I wish! The majority are slobs: mounds of dirty laundry thrown around the bedroom, on the furniture, using the old scratch ‘n’ sniff test to determine wear- ability….and the pee stains around the toilet!!!! Ugh. Trust me, I’ve done the research.

ALL GAY MEN ARE METICULOUS ABOUT THEIR APPEARANCE. Grooming tips can be lost on men in general – gay or straight. So can hygiene practices. And just because a man takes care of his appearance does not mean he’s automatically gay – that’s an insult to conscientious and groomed men around the world.

5. GAY MEN CAN NOT FIGHT OR DEFEND THEMSELVES. Okay – you need to watch gay porn to get rid of that conception; all the men are buffed beyond belief and can kick ass if needed, and that’s a body type we strive for by going to the gym regularly. Gay men are just as much to get into bar fights as straight men. Why? We’ve been defending ourselves since kindergarten……and we ain’t taking shit from anyone – capice?

GAY MEN DO NOT MIND IF WOMEN CHANGE IN FRONT OF THEM. Yes – WE DO! If we wanted to see you breastesses and couchies we’d be STRAIGHT men, okay? Seeing….um…those things (gag) is slightly traumatic to a gay man, just as straight men do NOT like staring at another man’s junk while he changes – okay? And YES, you do look fat in that……..

GAY MEN ARE HOPLESS WITH MECHANICAL ITEMS OR HOW TO FIX THINGS. Really. See item number 1. Also, we are the ones responsible for the trend of buying houses, FIXING ‘EM UP OURSELVES, and selling them for a profit. It’s called flipping. Kinda what we want to do to persons who think we’re mechanically challenged

GAY MEN ARE SENSITIVE AND CARING. Again – really? Tell that to my last ex- and numerous cads who think it nothing to sleep around despite their partners feelings. Wait – isn’t that similar to hetero men sleeping around too? Strange, this and many similarities that just keep popping up when comparing straight and gay men.

GAY MEN SEE WOMEN AS GIRL FRIENDS TO BE CHUMMY WITH. No, we don’t – you’re the enemy. And yes, we do want to sleep with your cute boyfriend. Sometimes we look at him and wonder “what the hell does this cutie see in her fat arse?!”

The bottom line is – men are men, gay or straight. We dogs, we’re assholes, we’re loving, we’re caring, we’re sensitive, we’re clueless, we’re smart and we’re clueless.

We’re men.

Period.

Do not make assumptions based on poor stereotypes, or men could use the same approach and would just go around thinking that all women are crazy, hormonal, domineering, controlling bitches that just want to get knocked up to trap you into marriage and screw you out of your hard earned money………

One of my favorite TV channels to watch when I have spare time is Fashion TV, or known simply as FTV.

Fashion TV is an international television channel devoted to fashion and modelling.

PROFESSOR Rex Nettleford, one of Jamaica's brightest sons and a cultural icon, died in the George Washington University Intensive Care Unit last night, six days after he collapsed in his hotel room in Washington and four hours before his 77th birthday.

Nettleford, who suffered a massive heart attack, was admitted to the hospital's intensive care unit and placed on life support. He never regained consciousness and finally passed at 8:00 pm.

Nettleford was a recipient of the 1957 Rhodes Scholarship to Oriel College, Oxford, and returned to Jamaica in the early 1960s to take up a position at the University of the West Indies. At the UWI he first came to attention as a co-author (with M.G. Smith and Roy Augier) of a groundbreaking study of the Rastafari movement in 1961.

In 1963 he founded the National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica, an ensemble which under his direction did much to incorporate traditional Jamaican music and dance into a formal balletic repertoire.

For over twenty years, Nettleford has also been the artistic director for the University Singers of the University of the West Indies, Mona campus in Jamaica. The combination of Nettleford as artistic director and Noel Dexter as musical director with the University Singers has seen the creation of what is referred to as "choral theatre".

Beginning with the collection of essays Mirror, Mirror published in 1969 and his editing and compiling of the speeches and writings of Norman Manley, Manley and the New Jamaica, in 1971, Nettleford established himself as a serious public historian and social critic.

In 1968, Nettleford took over direction of the School for Continuing Studies at the UWI and then of the Extra-Mural Department. In 1975, the Jamaican state recognized his cultural and scholarly achievements by awarding him the Order of Merit. In 1996, he became Vice-Chancellor of the UWI, and held that office until 2004, when he was succeeded by E. Nigel Harris.

Firefox was the first to introduce tabbed browsing, and offers spell check to persons who use the web for bloggin and data entry. The only downside to this program is that most government websites are not compatible with Firefox so you have to drag out the old and slow IE to access or use their website.

GOOGLE CHROME: Not to be left out of the browser wars global search engine dominant Google has entered with their browser called CHROME. It operates on the belief that speed and bare-bones graphics is better and forces their program to focus on performance rather than gimmicks. I think that the sparseness of the look reduces the presentation of similar popular features found in Firefox. However - they do promise faster browsing speeds than IE and that's a selling point to me!

OPERA: Opera is an internet browser built for one thing - speed. When compared against IE, Firefox and others in a third party test held in 2008 Opera out-performed the previous mentioned icons. Opera get's it's speed by using bit-torrent technology; getting all the information of a website not from one server but from numerous servers. (Kinda like filling a pool with 6 pipes rather than one pipe.) The downside of Opera is that - like all others - it is not intergrateble with some websites that rely on global dominant IE for their needs.

Over the weekend it was in released excerpts of the upcoming book "Game Change," by Time magazine's Mark Halperin and New York magazine's John Heilemann it was revealed that during the 2008 presidential campaign Senator Harry Reid (D – Nevada) made a comment – off the record in a private conversation – that he was “wowed by Obama's oratorical gifts and believed that the country was ready to embrace a black presidential candidate, especially one such as Obama, a 'light-skinned' African American 'with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one”.

Detractors of the Democrat Party and of the current administration immediately jumped on the bandwagon to label this a disgrace by Sen. Reid and howled calls for his immediate resignation.

Why? Can anyone tell me what is wrong with the above statement? I, myself, could not have said it any better!

On another note: I am getting a really, REALLY deep seated hatred for officials and elected members of the Republican Party and members of the so-called conservative base because they are no longer operating in the interest of the country as they like to claim; they are only out to destroy the country and take everyone down with them. Where is the party of the 1950s where the Republicans were seen as a bunch of ‘miserly old men who believed in conservative fiscal policies’? Where are the Republicans that believed in small-ER government and a robust market that encouraged a robust and FAIR competition?

The current Republican Party is an organization over-run by racist, war-mongering, greedy fascists who have no qualms about sending young innocent Americans to their deaths in an unnecessary war – and hell and damnation to those ‘un-Americans’ who dare to disagree with them.

They are a party that up to a few years ago PRAISED segregation champion and racist Sen. Strom Thurmond by stating that if he had been elected in his presidential bid in the 1940s America would be in a better place today.

This is a party that up to last year labeled Obama a man who “pal’d around with terrorists” and generated rumors about Obama being un-Christian and “possibly a Muslim”…not that there is anything wrong with that but they had previously labeled Muslims as ‘bad’ and ‘un-trustworthy’.

But an even bigger problem this country faces that is worse than the antics of the Republican Party is: the media.

For they are the ones that blew this story out of proportion and drew focus away from more important issues such as healthcare reform, job creation, and the obscene bonuses being awarded to employees of Wall Street banks.

And the number of media houses that carry any news on events outside the borders of the United States can be counted on one hand; the lack of diversity in the substance of the news outlets and the level of ignorance of current events in Europe, Asia and the East is appalling; it never fails to amaze me that this country is so self-involved and introverted that they forget that there is an entire world out there that has political views and economies that pose competition – and possibly a risk – to the American economy and GDP…and it’s national security.

That is until there is another attack similar to 9/11.

Or until China calls in their loans made to the American government to get them through this current economic mess we’re in.

Maybe then a factual statement made by a sitting U.S. senator may not seem such a big deal after all.

There has been a lot of speculation about exactly what happened last Thanksgiving weekend when Tiger Woods crashed his Escalade into a fire hydrant outside his home in Florida.

There's also been a lot of debate as to the extent of the coverage given to this incident - and the media's obsession of subsequent revelations of 'alleged' affairs by Mr. Woods with (to date) three different women. Why the obsession liberal media? Why, entertainment reporters, is Mr. Woods the sole focus of your programs?

I think I have and idea: the media have FINALLY found a crack in Tiger Woods' perfect image.

Personally, I've always disliked the man because he always came across as, well, to use British colloquialism - a smug prig. He always acted as if he was better than anyone else and to make it worse he was actually good at what he did. Top of his game. The envy of the world. And rich. And allegedly "not a person of color"...(his words, not mine).

Now, to discover all this salacious news about his supposed insatiable sexual appetite - it's just what Tiger haters like myself have been looking for: a chink the size of New York in his armor of fake perfection. And to hear that he's throwing money at his problems and they're NOT going away - gravy, just effing gravy! I can't wait to find out what happens next!!
